This website is supposed to be for geeky tattoos. While some are geeky most of them just suck. At least that's my opinion. I feel like this sit is a good representation of American tattoo consciousness, or whatever you would call it.. What I mean is, a lot of them are logos, common images, and are reminiscent of some sort of capitalistic mentality. I think if we took pictures of tattoos from places with a more sacred tattoo tradition they would be much more awesome. What do you think?

All things being equal, I agree with you. I feel like old cultures and traditions, which incorporate tattoos, have a rich history and meaning behind every tattoo that they wear.
ReplyDeleteK im gonna go get a barcode tattooed on my neck seeya =P
I agree with you. But then again, to each their own right? I guess people are willing to tattoo certain things that they enjoy even symbols that come from materialistic or entertainment aspects. I wonder what kind of ritual there would be if there were to be a ritual when getting a tattoo in American culture..
ReplyDeleteThe difference between these tattoos and those of the Borneo tribe, is one culture is young and growing, and one is old and dying. If there was a requirement, or standard before you got tattooed, maybe we would see more thoughtful and better designs, but with 300million people, there is going to be a good deal of crap, especially as more and more people accept tattoos as mainstream.
ReplyDeleteAs to the heart of the content, a lot of us grew up with television and video games, so those are the images that resonate with us. They may seem trite and common, but they taught us a lot about the world and informed who we would become, and since most people look back with fondness, we would want to carry some part of that with us, and since tattoos are also act as signifiers to other individuals, we can recognize kindred spirits, even if it is just a transformers emblem.
Also, with regards to the Borneo tribe, since most of their cultural works were transmitted verbally, how do we know that they didnt have lame, derivative stories that someone drunkenly got tattooed on themselves one night? What looks like a cool mask to us, could be about a neighboring tribe of idiots fighting in the mud.
but, some of those geeky tattoos are pretty lame.
